This project involved the complete refurbishment of the existing office building at the front of the site which was a typical 1960’s modernist block over two levels with poor quality internal cellular offices. New staff were being relocated from the city centre and the company was being re-branded as ‘Beam Suntory’ with the new office design reflecting the new company values. The work was carried out in a live environment in several phases to ensure that operations were maintained at all times.
The first phase of works constituted of the complete reconfiguration of the reception area – which was small and dark with poor public/private separation. The solution involved stripping the space back to a shell core to create an open and bright two storey atrium with clear definition of public/private space. External cladding panels were removed and replaced with glazed curtain walling for natural light. The next stage consisted of the phased upgrading of the office accommodation from cellular offices to open plan. This created sufficient space for the new staff and allowed us to integrate in break-out spaces, additional formal meeting rooms, and a staff kitchenette with meeting ‘pod’ greatly enhancing the working environment.
Working with the Beam Suntory marketing department, we integrated wayfinding and branding into our interior design scheme, producing high quality 3d visuals to explore brand placement options and carried out several stakeholder consultations to present our options. The project has completely transformed what was a dull, office space into a modern, vibrant and flexible working environment with space for collaboration and networking between departments, particularly important in order to integrate the new staff. We carried out a BUS survey for our post-occupany evaluation and the feedback from staff who worked in the building prior to refurbishment was overwhelmingly positive.
