St Andrews Church

Lochgelly

This project involved the retrofit of locally significant church facility for reuse as a community facility.

Location: Lochgelly, Fife

Client: Fife Council

Project Value: £1.8m

Status: Complete

St Andrews is a key building and asset to Lochgelly which has been empty since 2006. It was therefore important to the community that the Church be reused as well as that the renovations restore and retain its original features wherever possible.

Developing the project design proposals, we worked with Fife Council and agent Fife Historic Buildings Trust as well as development partner Rockgelly to bring the building back into use as a Regional climbing centre. The existing church was refurbished in 2018 by contractor John Smart & Son, with Clark Contracts Ltd delivering a 15m high extension to the rear of the church to house the competition height climbing walls, completed in 2021, as well as the addition of toilets, and a new mezzanine area within the church.

Currently awaiting specialist fit-out, the facility will provide a café, bouldering walls within the existing building and top-roped and lead-climbing arenas.
