Mayplace Primary School

Bexley

ECD Architects were appointed by the London Borough of Bexley to design new buildings to facilitate the school’s expansion from two-form entry to three-form entry. The project includes a new classroom block and extension to the existing entrance and nursery & reception block.

Location: Bexley

Client: London Borough of Bexley

Project Value: £3.2m

Specialisation: 1FE expansion including new classroom block, reception class extension & new entrance

The existing buildings are single storey, set within a sloping site with a large wooded area. The new classroom block is two storey and has been designed to minimise its visual impact and to tie in with the existing main school building. The choice of materials has been inspired by this context, comprising a mixture of bricks and composite timber cladding with a two-storey brise soleil to the south facade. The building is set into the landscape, creating a new terrace with opportunities for external teaching.

The new classroom block is connected with the main school building by a new link. A double height open space is formed at the key junction between the new and old school routes.
