University of Glasgow Library

Re-configuration and fit-out of existing floor layout to multi-storey library building including formation of study units and reconciliation of server space and facilities.

Client: University of Glasgow

Project Value: £890,000

Status: Complete

The Glasgow University Library Level 5 Annexe is located on the north side of the main library building which dates back to 1968. The remodelling of this space to provide a Postgraduate Study Room forms part of the ongoing programme of refurbishment that the building has seen throughout its time to adapt to changing user demand.

The University of Glasgow wanted to provide its Postgraduate students with an attractive bright new space where they would find the perfect environment to study, meet and experience the excellence with which the University supports them. It was therefore important to the University to create an appealing, cutting edge setting including networked desks in an open plan layout, meeting rooms with screens, audio and the latest AV equipment, as well as, a breakout corner, locker room, a photocopy and print area, and washroom facilities.

Accordingly, the replacement of all the existing mechanical & electrical services and the low ceiling soffit with data cabling to all of desks was critical to the project and a challenge to the design team. As a solution to this problem, we created a series of coloured boxes to run alongside the entire space. This feature contains all of the data cabling and the new services turning what could have been an obstacle into a key design feature.

In addition to transform the space its previous dark, oppressive appearance, all interior walls were removed to open up the space and allow views to the perimeter windows. Noise Transfer was mitigated by the introduction of full-height glass windows. Areas of the 2nd and 3rd Floors were upgraded to reconcile staff services and facilities. With the Building remaining open throughout the works.

To complete the final look of the Study Space, a graphic wall was provided as a large welcoming canvas at its main entrance. This promotes and informs the students of the University Library history as well as identifies relevant characters related to the Postgraduate Donor Programme of which the University can be proud.
