Skipton Big Retrofit Project

North Yorkshire

The 'Big Retrofit' project explores the costs and benefits of retrofit as well as how these might impact a property's value.

Location: Skipton, North Yorkshire

Client: Skipton Building Society

Status: On Site

Specialisation: Retrofit

ECD Architects is delighted to be working with Skipton Building Society on their Big Retrofit project – a retrofit project to showcase the benefits of home energy efficiency and inspire UK homeowners and landlords to retrofit their homes.

Retrofitting an average UK home can save residents hundreds of pounds per year. The goal of the Big Retrofit is therefore to identify the blockers, challenges, costs, benefits and realities for homeowners and private landlords who may consider retrofitting their homes – and help demystify and overcome these.

Skipton Building Society is transforming a typical three-bedroom, detached house currently rated EPC D into an energy efficient EPC B-rated home. Live filming the project and providing update commentary on the Skipton website’s dedicated ‘Regents Road Hub’ and social media channels, the Big Retrofit project provides practical insights and guidance for retrofitting properties.

Specifically, the project seeks to investigate if the high upfront costs of retrofitting can both reduce home running costs and potentially increase a property’s value, as well as find out the true costs of improving a properties EPC rating. With limited data available in the market, Skipton has commissioned Leeds Beckett and Leeds universities to collect high-quality data and insights on the building’s fabric performance.

Gaining first-hand experience of the costs and benefits of retrofit, Skipton Building Society aims to explore how it can support its customers with tailored financial solutions to support their investment in retrofit. It will also increase awareness of the energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures available for homes at various price points, detailing how these measures work, their invasiveness, and their success in improving the energy efficiency of the home – it is hoped that home owners and private landlords will recognise the economic and social benefits of retrofitting their own homes now and in the future.
