Mearns Castle High School Extension

ECD Architects is leading the design of a major extension to Mearns Castle High School in Newton Mearns, Glasgow. Commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council, the project replaces an underused section of the school with a modern two-storey building designed to enhance both learning and wellbeing. Following planning approval in December 2024, construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2025, timed to coincide with the school holidays to minimise disruption. The new extension will deliver six additional classrooms, administration offices, improved pupil facilities, and upgraded external areas—supporting a high-quality, inclusive learning environment for future generations.

A central ambition of the project is to create a future-proofed space that prioritises flexibility, accessibility, and sustainability. Alongside the new-build elements, the scheme includes refurbishment of internal areas such as pupil toilets and changing rooms, significantly improving the wider school experience.

As Lead Designer, ECD is delivering the project through RIBA Stages 2 to 3, providing BIM Level 2 Architectural and Management services to ensure a coordinated digital design. We are responsible for massing, façade design, and detailing, working closely with the structural, mechanical, and electrical teams. Delivered via a Design & Build procurement route, the project has scope for novation to the contractor post Stage 3.

The design complements the existing school fabric while introducing a contemporary aesthetic, with increased natural light, thoughtful material choices, and enhanced landscaping. In line with Scottish Futures Trust guidance, the use of BIM Level 2 supports efficiency and waste reduction, while energy-efficient systems and climate-conscious design strategies contribute to long-term sustainability. The Mearns Castle High School extension represents a strategic investment in education—delivering inspiring, resilient spaces that will benefit students and staff for years to come.
