The Longforgan Primary School project involved the refurbishment and new build extension of an existing Grade B listed school building within the conservation village of Longforgan providing additional teaching accommodation, gym hall, nursery and up-to-date facilities.

The Longforgan Primary School project involved the refurbishment and new-build extension of the existing grade B school building within the village of Longforgan for Perth & Kinross Council. The new development provides additional teaching accommodation,  a gym / dining  hall, a nursery and up-to-date facilities.

The new extension has a simple concept plan which is easy to understand and navigate. The new teaching block has a pitched roof which creates an airy and light environment in which learning is facilitated. The flexible, semi-open plan teaching spaces are accessed from a central circulation spine which also functions as breakout space and additional / informal teaching space. A lowered ceiling is provided adjacent to the circulation spine to allow efficient servicing of all spaces. Each of the new classrooms within the extension has a door to the external play area. The overall form of the building externally conveys a sense of the internal arrangement for those approaching, whilst reflecting the roof shape, scale and profile of the adjacent listed school building and buildings generally within the locality.

The west block connects to the existing 1908 grade B listed school building with a glazed corridor, which directly links to teaching spaces within the old and new parts of the school. The existing listed building accommodation has been reconfigured to provide a more efficient layout, with upgrades to the buildings fabric thermal performance, stonework repairs, and replacement roof and windows.

The new south block accommodates a large nursery facility with its own separate entry and play area, enabling the nursery children to play and learn in a completely secure environment. Adjacent to the nursery is the double-height gym / dining hall. Designed as a flexible space, this facility has been deliberately located and designed so that it can be isolated from the main school facilities, and used for community events.
