Keyworth Primary School

This project is for the replacement of the cladding at Keyworth Primary School, while also improving thermal comfort within the school, lowering its energy costs and improving its overall aesthetics to attract more students.

Location: Nottingham

Client: AMR Consult

This project is for the replacement of the hung tile cladding at Keyworth Primary School, where the cladding has been failing.

The design for the new cladding provides a cohesive aesthetic to the building through the use of different colours and textures available within the product selected. Two red tones (red and amber) were identified as the preferred option for the school; reflective of the schools existing building colours and identity. The cladding design segments the various elevations to provide a refreshed, contemporary look for the 1960s lightweight steel building.

ECD are working alongside our sister company Keegans who are providing Cost Consultancy and Principal Designer services for the project. ECD have also collaborated with Ridge to develop a robust overheating mitigation strategy. Working with the appointed consultant team ensured a viable scheme was delivered within the client’s brief, whilst looking for added value opportunities in the design outcomes and delivery.

Whilst giving a functional upgrade to the external envelope, there was an opportunity to provide a thermal upgrade to the insulation, and add solar shading to mitigate overheating issues during summer. Introducing solar shading will reduce solar gains in the summer, whilst still allowing for sufficient solar gains throughout the winter. At the same time, improving the building insulation within the cladding will help retain heat during winter and keep the heat out during summer. These measures will provide a more energy efficient building suited to fluctuations in temperature throughout both summer and winter to provide a more comfortable learning environment.

In March 2024, members of the ECD team held an engagement activity day at the school which consisted of 3 parts; a climate change assembly and workshop, a sketching workshop with all students, and a parent/teacher/councillor’s  presentation and Q&A session. The sketches from the workshop will be arranged and printed onto a custom cladding panel, which will then be added to the school entrance.
