The refurbishment of Campsie Memorial Hall in Lennoxtown, Glasgow, has transformed a historic community asset into a modern, accessible and energy-efficient facility at the heart of the town. Delivered on behalf of Hub West Scotland, East Dunbartonshire Council and Campsie Memorial Hall Trust, the project balances heritage, sustainability and community need to create a revitalised space for local use. Originally dating back to the 1860s, with additions in the 1950s, the building had become underused due to poor accessibility, thermal performance and limited flexibility. The project set out to modernise the hall, improve efficiency and reduce operational costs, while strengthening its role as a community hub.
Decarbonisation was a key driver. Fabric upgrades significantly improved thermal performance, enabling the replacement of gas boilers with air source heat pumps and MVHR systems. These measures reduce energy demand while improving comfort, supported by zoned services for flexible use. Accessibility improvements addressed a complex layout previously spread across seven levels, rationalised to three with a new lift and central staircase. A new entrance, external ramp and first-floor extension now provide inclusive, step-free access throughout, including to the stage.
Internally, flexible spaces such as the Main Hall and Lesser Hall are supported by increased storage and improved back-of-house facilities, allowing a wide range of uses and income-generating opportunities. Externally, the design respects the original character while introducing a contemporary extension that enhances the building’s presence. Close collaboration with stakeholders ensured the design responds to community needs. The completed refurbishment delivers a welcoming civic space, securing the long-term environmental and financial sustainability of Campsie Memorial Hall.
