Auchentoshan Visitor Centre

Clydebank

The Auchentoshan Visitor Centre provides a welcome point as well as a shop to encourage visitors to the distillery.

Location: Clydebank

Client: Beam Suntory

Project Value: £500,000

Status: Complete

Specialisation: Passive Design & Fabric First Approach, Flood Resilience measures

Until recently Auchentoshan was the closest distillery to Glasgow city centre. However, with no visitor centre and tours by booking only, it had failed to capture a potentially lucrative market. We were already working for Beam Suntory at other sites when we suggested that there was a commercial opportunity for a visitor centre. We undertook a feasibility study for this, including a business case and commercial viability analysis, and on the back of this secured funding for the new visitor centre from Scottish Enterprise.

As the starting point of the distillery tours, the interior of the Visitor Centre has a warm atmosphere reflective of the site traditional buildings and includes a waiting area and shop as well as an interactive display on the history of the distillery. The project required extensive re-modelling of the distillery entrance to create distinct public / private access, and significant internal structural work to allow the 18th century building to be opened-up into a modern, contemporary space. Complete, the centre has been a huge success story with visitor numbers well in excess of anticipated and proposals already underway for a future extension.
