Shortlisted Twice for the AJ100 Awards

ECD Architects shortlisted for 2 x AJ100 awards 2024

May 30, 2024

ECD Architects are delighted to be shortlisted for two of the AJ100 2024 Awards – the AJ100 Practice of the Year award and the AJ100 Sustainability Leader of the Year award.

The Architects’ Journal AJ100 Programme celebrates the achievements of the UK’s largest architecture practices, measured by the number of architects employed in the UK, including those leading the way on sustainability. The AJ100 Awards are granted to those who excel in the AJ100 categories such as the: AJ100 Champions Award, AJ100 Employer of the Year, AJ100 New Talent Award, AJ100 Communication Initiative of the Year, AJ100 Change-maker of the Year and the AJ100 Mentor of the year.

The AJ100 ‘Practice of the Year’ award champions practices which are committed to driving positive change, either through their own projects and ways of working, or within the wider profession and beyond.

ECD is currently working on the retrofit of over 10,000 homes across the UK, demonstrating how housing can be retrofitted at scale, even when residents are in situ, a vital task to avert catastrophic climate collapse. For this to be achieved, we have prioritised staff training and the way in which we work. A quarter of our staff are now trained Passivhaus designers, with a further quarter having undertaken PHPP user training. This level of understanding of how buildings use energy improves how we design, make project decisions and lead clients through a project. We have shared much of our knowledge and experience of this over the last year through our opportunity to provide lectures on retrofit to students at Nottingham University and the University of Central Lancashire, where we are providing ongoing input, helping to ensure that newly trained architects are better prepared for the challenges of retrofit. ECD have contributed a substantial portion of the content for the Retrofit Academy’s upcoming Retrofit Designer course, as well as taking on the editorial role. This will help give other architects and built environment professionals the knowledge and confidence to carry out retrofit work themselves.

ECD Regional Head of Sustainability shortlisted for the AJ100 Sustainability Leader of the Year Award

Loreana Padron, our Regional Head of Sustainability covering London and the South of England, has been shortlisted for the AJ100 awards Sustainability Leader of the Year; a category developed during 2023 to recognise outstanding contributions made to the sustainable design agenda.

Loreana has been advocating sustainability at ECD Architects since joining us in 2012. As Regional Head of Sustainability, Loreana ensures our projects meet the highest standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility, as well as ensures we are achieving our short and long-term sustainability strategy and action plan. From the sourcing and footprint of materials to designing energy-efficient buildings, her goal is to create beautiful, healthy, and functional spaces that have a positive impact on both people and the planet. Over the years, Loreana has assisted numerous clients in developing their decarbonisation strategies and low-carbon projects. Loreana runs the ECD Sustainability Working Group, a platform where she provides in-house support and training to our staff, helping them to achieve their own professional development goals, as well as the review of our projects from a Design and Sustainability perspective. Loreana is always keen to share her knowledge, often giving talks at universities and industry conferences and has created our in-house Sustainability Hub, an intranet to gather all sustainability-related resources to help our staff achieve better and more sustainable projects.

We are thrilled for her – and are so proud of our team. These recognitions are truly a direct reflection of their excellence.

A big congratulations to all the other amazing contenders as well. We are looking forward to attending the AJ100 event on Friday the 21st of June where the winners of the Awards, and the full rankings of the AJ100 survey, will be revealed. Best of luck to everyone!
