An Experimental Book Swap

January 26, 2015

ECD Architects a proud to be sponsor of the second book edition of The Environmental Design Pocketbook. This sponsorship will keep the cost of the 2nd edition the same as the first edition (£25) despite the new books increased length and improved binding.

The new edition is to be launched at a ‘book swap’ event hosted by ourselves, RIBA Publishing and RIBA Bookshops:

  • Date: 27 January 2014
  • Time: 6-8pm
  • Location: RIBA Bookshop at Portland place

The second book edition of The Environmental Design Pocketbook is out with updated research, guidance and new legislation (such as the new Building Regulations and the new RIBA Plan of Work) alongside an extended retrofit chapter and new sections on the performance gap and the influence building maintenance and care and commissioning of buildings has on their energy performance, and how to achieve good building maintenance.

James Traynor from ECD architects says: “I wish this book had been around when I was a student! The Environmental Design Pocketbook condenses so much invaluable information in one handy guide and helps prioritise the many competing aspects of the design challenge. We are very happy to play our part in ensuring that this book continues to be available to as many people as possible – especially students. Several members of our office were involved in the writing of this guide we are very pleased to sponsor this book.

Sofie has made, and continues to make, a significant contribution towards ensuring sustainable design (both new build and refurbishment) is at the forefront of the architectural debate. Despite advances made by Industry, Government and others there is still much to be done if we in the building industry are to play our part in meeting Climate Change commitments. This book is an important tool for architects and others in ensuring this happens.”

In total, an additional 80 pages are included in the 2nd edition, making the book now almost 500 pages. As a result the decision was made to print on thinner FSc sourced paper and not thicker recycled paper as for edition 1 to minimise the impact of the additional pages. It also has a flexible back now which means that navigating the book and leaving it open is so much easier!
