ECD was commissioned by Worcestershire County Council to design a major extension to Birchensale Middle School in Redditch. The project involved re-modelling the school entrance and administrative offices, creating new laboratories and computer rooms, and adding nine new classrooms doubling the school's intake from 300 to 600 pupils.

Considerable thought had to be given to the phasing and logistics of construction work in order to minimise disruption to normal teaching activities. Daily meetings were held between the Headteacher and Site Manager in order to ensure good communications concerning the nature and timing of work to be carried out on site. Post occupancy feedback has been good and school morale has improved significantly. The project was completed on budget and on time and received a Mention at the Civic Trust Awards.
