Code for sustainable homes
Introduction to the Code for Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) provides an environmental rating of new domestic buildings, based on scores given to a wide range of issues, including: energy, water, waste, materials, and management. A one to six star rating system communicates the overall sustainability performance.
Launched in the UK in 2006 by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Code supports the government target that all new homes will be zero carbon from 2016 and the step changes in Building Regulations Part L leading to this.
Drivers and Value
The Code assessment process provides a clearly defined and effective structure for the evaluation and delivery of sustainable homes.
Homes that utilise natural resources efficiently are cost effective to operate, enhance occupant health and wellbeing, and boost returns by increased value, reduced risk of depreciation and market volatility.
Final certification provides a clear and communicable signal to potential investors, owners and occupants.
