
Ian Sarchett
BSc MRICS, Managing DirectorAs Managing Director, Ian’s role is to champion all building consultancy teams in the successful delivery of projects to meet quality targets, both within programme and financial budgets and to ensure the delivery of Best Value to clients. Ian ensures that all team members are performing efficiently, that lines of communication are well established and operationally effective. His role integrates all disciplines, team members and works in adhering to targeted high quality standards and surpassing client’s expectations.

Andrew Fursdon
BA(Hons), BArch, RIBA, DirectorAndrew studied at Liverpool University and qualified as an architect in 1987. He has worked in private practice since qualifying, during which time he’s worked for a number of international practices. He has been responsible for a range of award winning projects and his experience includes office, industrial and healthcare related facilities. However over recent years Andrews experience has been focused on the science sector and the design of large, technically demanding research facilities for both multi-national clients and government funded agencies.
Andrews role at ECD involves helping to develop the design output and delivery of projects and services provided to our clients.

Richard Ferraro
BA(Hons) DipArch RIBA FRSA, DirectorRichard studied at Nottingham University and in London. Before 1980 he worked in England and France on innovative, solar-heated buildings. In 1980 he became a founding partner of Energy Conscious Design (ECD); now a Director of ECD Architects Ltd, with responsibility for ECD's work on medium and large scale large projects in the housing and commercial sectors.
Richard works with private developers and public sector clients, and he's been responsible for numerous low energy buildings, several of which have won awards. His work includes urban regeneration and masterplanning, housing, office buildings, industrial parks, and mixed use town centre buildings. He has completed two large logistics centres at Greenford in West London; also the award winning Banbury Museum, and The Royal Ballet School in Covent Garden.
Richard is also an expert in building procurement and the refurbishment of 1950s and 1960s housing, including tower blocks.

David Fisher
DipArch (Ab) MPhil (Glas) ARB RIBA ARIAS, DirectorDavid is a Director of ECD’s Scotland office. A qualified Architect and Town Planner whose experience is wide ranging, gained over 34 years of practice. David works with both private developers and public sector clients, and has undertaken medium and large scale projects both in the UK and overseas.
David's work includes private and social housing, hotels, leisure developments, business parks and advance industrial units.
While working in the Highlands of Scotland, David gained in-depth knowledge of the particular challenges of development within a rural context.

Alan Campbell
BArch Dip Arch RIBA RIAS, DirectorAlan has 30 years experience in the design and construction industry both at home and abroad, and has been involved in a variety of projects across a broad range of sectors including Housing, Education, Health, Commercial and Industrial. He assisted the formation and establishment of tenant participation and community consultation models, and continues to work with and advise Local Authorities, RSLs and a range of Commercial clients
A registered architect in both the UK and Republic of Ireland, Alan is also an accredited energy assessor for non domestic Energy Performance Certificates in compliance with the EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings.
Working between both London and Glasgow, he is ECD Architects’s Director responsible for business development contract procurement and Client Liaison.

Mark Elton
BSc(Hons) DipArch, RIBA, Associate Director
Mark has a long-held interest in sustainable design that stems from his combined architectural and engineering education at the University of Bath in the late ‘80s. He joined ECD Architects in 2001 where he has gained a broad experience in sustainable design, master planning and construction throughout the country. The potential for reducing carbon emissions through retrofit of the existing stock is of particular interest, as demonstrated through exemplar townhouse and tower block refurbishment schemes that combine super-insulated fabric improvements with integrated renewables and low-carbon extensions.
He became an Associate Director at ECD in 2004, and was designated Head of Sustainability in 2008. He now represents the practice on the RIBA Sustainable Futures committee, recently taking on the role of Knowledge Champion for its online sustainability community.

James Traynor
BA(Hons) BArch(Dist) RIBA, Associate DirectorIn 2004 James completed an MSc at the Centre for Alternative Technology specialising in the application of renewable energy in the domestic sector. Prior to joining ECD he worked on a variety of educational, industrial and residential projects, and in 2005 he won the Joseph Rowntree House of the future competition. In recent years, James has been involved in a number of regeneration pathfinder schemes in Newcastle and Liverpool and is currently running a major housing redevelopment in Bow, East London. He has a particular interest in post-occupancy evaluation as a means of improving our understanding of design and long-term service to clients.

Alistair Cameron
BSc Hons MSC ARB , AssociateAn Architect with seven years experience, Alistair is experienced in a broad spectrum of work across many sectors including masterplanning, housing, commercial, ecclesiastical, police buildings, office development, industrial development, space planning and feasibility studies from inception to completion.

Dan Jenkins
BA(Hons) DipArch CPPA ARB, AssociateDan completed his Part III in 2001 at Kingston University having focused on community social buildings and spaces. As an Associate, Dan is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of specific ECD project teams and manages design projects from inception through to practical completion. Dan has worked on a variety of project types and is currently overseeing teams working on a primary school expansion project in Kingston and school premises extensions in Kent and Lambeth. He is also leading a sustainable carbon reduction retrofit scheme of 4 houses in Crawley, an extension and renovation programme in Chelsea and a church infill extension for the Synod of the United Reformed Church.





Michael Birnie
MEng PhD CEng MEI, Associate: Sustainability Team LeaderMichael Birnie is a chartered energy engineer and Member of the Energy Institute. Prior to joining ECD Project Services he worked for a large multi-national sustainability consultancy delivering specialist projects within the public and private sectors for the implementation of energy and carbon management strategies, and the sustainable design, construction and evaluation of new and refurbished developments. Michael has an in-depth knowledge of sustainable development with regard to sustainability planning legislation and requirements.

We learn to trust individuals as they grow within the practice, and we seek to utilise their skills to best advantage – for both the client and the practice as a whole. We learned a long time ago that the idea of “seniority = all knowledge” is long gone in our industry. What works well is the combination of knowledge and experience, with creativity and innovation.
